Winter losses

5th April, 2010 - Posted by admin - 2 Comments

Upon inventory I am down to 1 hive again. It seems I will never get a strong producing hive. I am optimistic that I will be getting another strong hive this season and I will be well equipped to handle several swarms this year. I am looking forward to the calls… Read More

Swarms!

16th May, 2009 - Posted by admin - 1 Comment

I think swarm season is in full swing. I received 2 calls today. The first call I missed and another beekeeper got it… The second I caught. It was on the side of a home near Hilliard. The had just settled into a hole in his house. I offered to pry a board back to help the homeowner determine how bad the infestation was. The bees were right there… I was able to scoop most of the bees and catch the bulk of them. I was surprised… Thanks Tom for the call. Read More

Bring on the swarms!

21st April, 2009 - Posted by admin - 1 Comment

After loosing 2 of my 3 hives this year I am hoping to catch a few swarms to bring my numbers up. At best guess I would say bees should begin swarming in the next few weeks. Depends on the weather… I am ready to set up 5 more hives this year. If you encounter a honeybee swarm please call me at 614-726-6183. Typically swarms will stay anywhere from a few hours to a few days. Honey bees swarms are typically not aggressive as long as you do not irritate them. Keep your distance and call a beekeeper and you will be OK. Read More

Lemongrass Oil

28th March, 2009 - Posted by admin - 2 Comments

I met the owner of Pure-N-Simple natural foods in Delaware Ohio. She has agreed to order lemongrass oil in for me as well as keep it in stock. My intent this year is to focus on catching swarms. Scout bees are drawn to the scent of lemongrass oil so it is my goal to make this work for me… Check out Pure-N-Simple foods Read More

Stratford Ecological Center

27th March, 2009 - Posted by admin - No Comments

I have recently offered my assistance at Stratford Ecological Center. It is a volunteer position helping to look out for their 3 hives. The summer is the busiest time at Stratford and they are looking for a few extra hands to keep an eye on things.  Nothing too technical but hopefully it will be a good learning experience and a chance to socialize with other beekeepers. I am looking forward to helping out and learning more about their organization as well… Check out their site. www.stratfordecologicalcenter.org Read More

Harsh winter loss…

27th March, 2009 - Posted by admin - 1 Comment

I lost nearly 70 percent of my hives this year… While that sounds harsh it was only 2 hives. I have learned a few lessons about feeding and winterizing from it. Luckily I still have one hive left. I have high expectations for that one hive this year. I just want honey I dont have to buy… Hopefully i get enough for my own consumption this year. A batch of mead would be nice as well… The bees have been flying collecting nectar and taking syrup rather quickly. Looking forward to the honey flow and putting my super on. I am  still not convinced that winter is over. Hopefully it is though. Read More

Spring is Near

11th March, 2009 - Posted by admin - 1 Comment

With Spring rapidly approaching I am getting quite anxious. I am not near as prepared as i was last year. My intent was to have enough equipment to start 3 more hives this year. Not happening yet. I think I may finish the top bar hive i started last year. Seeing as this hobby is all about learning for me why not? (more…) Read More
